I received a copy of this book from the authors for an unbiased review.
I wasn't sure how I was going to like a book about Ryan and Denver. I mean, Denver - yeah, she's awesome. But Ryan was a bit of an enigma up until this point. I was pretty sure he wasn't going to be a dick - that spot is already taken by Malachi, but man, the field was wide open. Even a little ways in I still didn't have a handle on him.
Then Denver's inner monologue came. That's when I started to understand what Ryan was about. In fact, I think we learned more about him through Den than we did by hearing stuff straight from the horse's mouth. And I. LOVE. THAT.
My favorite stories are where you get the plot via context, not by reading a rambling narrative. Mind you, if that's written well, it can be good too, but it takes a skilled author to sneak you the details of the plot without handing them to you outright. There were moments in
Lost Lyric where the characters came out and told "us" what was happening, but most of the time we learned about things because they unfolded naturally.
Both of the leads had mysterious backstories, although to differing degrees, and they dovetailed together nicely near the end of the book. I say "nicely," even though it was pretty tense and suspenseful - mostly because it didn't take up a lot of time. I liked that the majority of the book was about our couple, and not this backstory that could've made things cluttered and messy.
I have to put this book in the super hot and steamy category, because MAN OH MAN... the scene with the earbuds in the bus... CRAZYTOWN.
And don't worry, there are some cameos from familiar faces. Twisty, surprising cameos. The setup for the next book has me already salivating. Molly isn't my favorite character, in fact, I don't think you could PAY me to hang with her. That being said - if she gets taken down a peg or two by the Professor and the Rock Star, I'm 100% IN!
Lost Lyric was so close to perfect that I had to give it FIVE STARS. I can't wait for [b:Perfect Pitch|35112521|Perfect Pitch (Found in Oblivion Book 5)|Cari Quinn|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1494475820s/35112521.jpg|56423572], so... *grabby hands*
