Race the Darkness (Fatal Dreams)

Race the Darkness (Fatal Dreams) - Abbie Roads I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for this honest review.

I can't remember where it was, but I read a preview of this book at some point - so when I saw the book on NetGalley, I put in a request to read it right away.

In the preview, it's the first chapter, and Xander is heavily featured. He's interrogating a criminal and it lays out his abilities with some scant details - mostly so you get a feel for his character. As you get further in, the reader learns more and more about him, and how he is tied to the heroine.

Speaking of which... our heroine, Isleen, made my heart hurt. At times both delicate and rock-solid, she has to face many shattering situations that would level any real-life person. It outlines the bond that Xander and Isleen have for each other.

I had love/hate relationships with Alex & Kent. So frustrating that I couldn't decide on whether to punch them in the face... HARD, or give them a hug.

Couldn't stand several other characters (I'll let you decide who), and utterly LOVED Row. I'm incredibly intrigued by Lathan, who makes a few cameo appearances in this book. He's going to be the Hero in the second 'Fatal Dreams' story, so I'm quite looking forward to it.

Overall, since I don't want to give any spoilers, 'Race the Darkness' had a lot of blind-faith paranormal story (I wish Ms. Roads would've given us more about 'The Institute'), an intense and binding love story, a few Alpha a$$holes, and some stuff that might actually be triggers for a few folks. kidnapping, abuse, non-sexual torture. None of these were performed by the main characters - so it's not a dark romance.

I give this one 4.5-stars. I read it in one sitting, but I would've enjoyed more book if there had been more stuff fleshed out. However, the story was complete as-is as well.

Be ready for a spider-web of interconnectivity.
